During the fire season or as otherwise dictated, the policy for playing games is as follows:
- ALL games will be played as scheduled unless otherwise stated by the League. That is the default position of the League.
- Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) must be 6 or lower one (1) hour before the start of the game. At that time, if the AQHI is above the acceptable threshold, the League will issue a notice of postponement to team reps.
- Until further notice, the KSL uses PurpleAir for its Canadian AQHI readings.
- Teams and/or players DO NOT cancel games, only the League does and the referee has the final say – if an assessment must be made at game time.
- If no postponement is given by the League and a team is short players, it is a 1-0 DEFAULT (no individual scoring) and subject to the performance bond policy.
- The League will attempt to reschedule the match, but if not possible, the game will be deemed a 1-1 tie.
- In the end, if an individual is not comfortable playing in a match (for whatever reason), that is his right and an individual decision.
- DO NOT email or text the League during the business day.
Heat warnings will be posted as quickly as possibly on the league web site as advised by the Weather Network site at: https://www.theweathernetwork.com/ca/hourly-weather-forecast/british-columbia/kamloops
The KSL also provides the following guidance in accordance with BC Soccer recommendations:
- 38C or higher – EXTREME RISK : postpone or abandon the match
- 32C – 37C – HIGH RISK : multiple water breaks per half, mandatory shortened games, teams encouraged to bring shade devices, lots of water, sub often etc.
- 28C – 31C – MODERATE RISK: consider shortened games, at least 1 water break per half, teams encouraged to bring shade devices, lots of water, sub often etc.
The KSL follows the CSA Lightning Safety / Severe Weather Policy as set out by the BC Soccer Association – Referee Rules, Regulations and Resources.
This policy is administered by the referee in charge of your match. It is not within the authority of individual KSL members or teams to determine how and when this policy is applied or enforced. Failure to comply may result in individual or team sanction.
The KSL will make it’s best effort to reschedule games cancelled or abandoned as a result of poor air quality or severe weather in accordance with the applicable polices. If rescheduling is not feasible, the game will be deemed a 1-1 draw with no individual player stats recorded.
